Rolf Garthus
Hostel Shoppe, Stevens Point (Recumbent Specialist)
Rolf Garthus started the Hostel Shoppe in Stevens Point in the spring of 1974 and has owned and managed it since. Driven by a love for bicycling since he got his first 10-speed Gitane touring bike in 1968, he soon found himself in the business of selling bikes. Rolf rides about 4000 to 5000 miles per year commuting to and from work and touring. He has done both self supported touring and group tours. For two years in the late 1970s the Hostel Shoppe sponsored a week long ride called WRVT (Wisconsin River Valley Tour), which followed the Wisconsin River from source to mouth. Sound familiar?
Rolf started riding a recumbent in the late 1980s because of neck discomfort while on his upright bike. In a short time he was very comfortable and equally as fast on his recumbent as he had been on his upright bike. A short time later he started selling recumbents in the Hostel Shoppe. In 2003, with the help of Advanced Transportation Products (Vision Recumbents), Rolf designed and developed the Volae line of recumbent bicycles aimed at the serious road bike rider who is experiencing increased discomfort on an upright and wants a recumbent that is fast and climbs well. Rolf has fit thousands of riders and has a wealth of experience to draw on when helping people choose the right model and size of recumbent for their needs.
